Learn to foster the holistic development of children and the creation of a more just, sustainable, and peaceful society.

The purpose of Deep Teaching – Growing Peace is to foster the holistic development of children and the creation of a more just, sustainable, and peaceful society. Deep Teaching – Growing Peace works with educators providing information, inspiration, and support for integrating experiences relating to peace, nature, and spiritual development into educational curricula and practices.

RETREAT AGENDA

Friday June 2

  • 3:00-5:00pm: Arrival time, mingle, art project, hors d’oeuvres
  • 5:00 to 7:00 – If you are still hungry there are many lovely restaurants in town, walking distance from the retreat center or you can choose to hang out at the retreat center and continue to work on your art project (a self-portrait to be used for introducing yourself to others on Saturday morning).
  • 7:30 to 9:00 Public Talk: STREAMS for Living and Learning – an introduction to spiritual development as viewed as providing a foundation for all learning (Science, technology, reading, engineering, art, mathematics, and spirituality) and much much more!

Saturday June 3

Morning

  • Early birds, bird walk before breakfast
  • Breakfast on your own
  • Formal introductions using nature material self-portrait collages – Who are you and why are you here?
  • The morning will be dedicated to talking about spiritual development (non-religious) and experiencing spiritual moments using nature and the 100 languages of children led by Deb Schein.
  • The morning will end with table discussions around views of spiritual development and 100 languages
  • How do they connect to nature education?
  • Lunch at the center

Afternoon

  • Nature experience – bring clothes that will allow you to dress for the weather
  • Nature presentation and the importance of biophilia (E.O. Wilson’s term for one’s innate connection to the natural world) led by Patti Bailie
  • What is peace education? Sharing of the definition of peace from the Earth Charter.
  • The afternoon will end with table discussions around spiritual development and nature, and how these topics relate to deep learning and peace.
  • Dinner on your own

Evening

  • TED talk (Sherry Turkle’s talk “Alone Together”) and discussion led by Jeffrey Schein 

Sunday June 4

  • Early birds, bird walk before breakfast
  • Breakfast on your own
  • What will you take back home? How can you integrate these ideas in your classroom? Reflection, Integration, Brain Storming for what comes next. End with a big share.
  • Lunch at the center
  • 1:00-2:00pm – Depart for home
