The Biosophical Institute offers funding opportunities to individuals and nonprofit organizations whose work advances peace and character education, community, spirituality, and environmental and social justice.
Who & What We Fund
These grants and scholarships, guided by our mission, help individuals and organizations pursue education, research, and initiatives strengthening the core values of the topics listed below.
Peace and Character Education
Programs that teach peace, personal growth, and ethical decision-making through education and practice. Scholarship and projects that explore wisdom, ethics, and values supporting inner peace and spirituality
Democracy and Social Justice
Initiatives that seek to educate individuals about human and collective rights.
Advancing Environmental Initiatives
Programs that promote environmental awareness and connect children to nature in order to develop conservation values and stewardship of the earth.
Building Peaceful Communities
Efforts that build collaboration, strengthen relationships, and promote positive engagement across communities
Applications are accepted year-round, but reviews take place twice a year, March 15 and October 15. Submissions received before March 15 are considered in the spring cycle, and those received before October 15 are considered in the fall cycle. Applicants will be notified of decisions within 90 days of the review date.
Our Funding Opportunities
We offer several distinct funding programs. Each grant or scholarship has its own focus, eligibility, application process, and award amount. Explore the options below to find the one that best matches your goals.
The Lowell Scott Ensel Grant
Awarded to young individuals committed to building peaceful communities and supporting social justice.
Awards of up to $5,000
Program and Project Grants - open to individuals and nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. Applications must align with our mission and at least one of our core themes: peace and character education, community, spirituality, and environmental and social justice.
The Frederick Kettner Scholarship - the scholarship is open to graduate and post-graduate students. Doctoral candidates nearing completion of their dissertations are especially encouraged to apply.
The Ron Matsko-Ensel Grant - This grant is open to educators from pre-K through 12.
Applications are reviewed twice a year, beginning March 15 and October 15, with funding decisions sent within 90 days of the review date.
Program and Project Grants - We fund projects of varying scale, with most grants being no larger than $10,000. Successful applications tend to show budget sensitivity, clear impact, and sustainability.
The Frederick Kettner Scholarship - Scholarships of up to $10,000, the scholarship is intended to support dissertation work and related research. Tuition may be considered if it directly advances the applicant’s work on one of the scholarship’s focus areas.
The Ron Matsko-Ensel Grant - applicants may request up to $5,000. The award is intended to cover project-related expenses such as curriculum development, program materials, facilitation, or other direct costs.
