Project Grant

Our Program and Project Grant supports individuals and nonprofits advancing peace, character, or ethics through education, research, or practice. These grants help launch or expand community initiatives and programs that strengthen human values.

What We Fund & Who Can Apply

Program and Project Grants focus on work that advances peace, ethics, and community. Grants are awarded in amounts up to $10, 000. Included in this award may be in-kind use of the Center valued at no more than $5,000.  We welcome applications from individuals and nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations whose programs and projects align with our mission. Successful proposals show a clear connection to our core themes, present realistic goals, and demonstrate meaningful community impact.

Open to both individuals and nonprofits, making it possible for scholars, educators, and community leaders to apply

Building Peace

Since building peace is a fundamental mission of the Biosophical Institute, successful proposals will draw on the core themes and clearly illustrate how the program or project will accomplish this goal.

Application Details & Timeline

Applications for Project Grants are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed twice a year, March 15 and October 15. Submissions received by March 15 will be considered in the spring review cycle, and those received by October 15 will be reviewed in the fall cycle. Applicants are notified of funding decisions within 90 days of each review date.

Submission Requirements

Cover Letter

One page including the applicant’s name, mailing address, phone, and email

Sponsoring institution name and address (if applicable)

Project title

Brief summary of the proposed project (2–3 sentences)

Proposal Abstract

One page including a concise overview of the project and significance

Include the applicant’s name and institution on this page

Body of Proposal

No more than five pages including a description of the project & significance/broader impact (how this work benefits society)

Research plan, methodology, and dissemination plan (how results will be shared: book, articles, web, other)

Project Budget

Detailed line-item budget with justification for each expense

Acceptable items may include: honoraria, fees, travel, conference/workshop costs, reasonable living expenses, research-related expenses

Citations & References

Citations and/or letters of support in a separately labeled document

Other Project Donors

List confirmed and/or prospective funding source

Who is eligible to apply?

Program and Project Grants are open to individuals and nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. Applications must align with our mission and at least one of our core themes: peace and character education, community, spirituality, and environmental and social justice.

When will I hear back about my application?

Applications are reviewed twice a year, beginning March 15 and October 15, with funding decisions sent within 90 days of the review date.

How much funding is available?

We fund projects of varying scale, with most grants being no larger than $10,000. Successful applications tend to show budget sensitivity, clear impact, and sustainability.

What kind of expenses can the grant cover?

Acceptable expenses include honoraria, fees, travel, conference or workshop costs, reasonable living expenses, research-related costs, and in some cases operating expenses. In kind use of the Center, up to $5,000 of the total award may be included. All expenses must be justified in the budget.

Can organizations outside Maine apply?

Yes. While the Institute is based in Bath, Maine, Project Grants are not limited to Maine-based applicants. However, project grants are limited US based organizations and individuals.

Do you fund recurring or ongoing projects?

Yes, we often provide funding for multi-year projects.
