The Frederick Kettner Scholarship

The Frederick Kettner Scholarship supports doctoral students pursuing studies in philosophy, ethics, and peace. Named in honor of Dr. Frederick Kettner, founder of the Biosophical Institute, this scholarship reflects his vision of applying philosophy to life and advancing peace through education and ethical leadership.

What We Fund & Who Can Apply

The Frederick Kettner Scholarship supports doctoral students in the final phases of dissertation work within one year of completing their degree. Post-doctoral projects will also be considered. Projects that explore themes such as character and peace education, the synthesis of science and religion, overcoming religious, national, racial, or social prejudices, the pursuit of democracy and world peace, the philosophy of Spinoza and other ethicists, spiritual development and inner peace, and historical analyses of peace-related topics are encouraged.

Application Details & Timeline

Applications are accepted year-round, but reviews take place twice a year, March 15 and October 15. Submissions received before March 15 are considered in the spring cycle, and those received before October 15 are considered in the fall cycle.  Applicants will be notified of decisions within 90 days of the review date.

Submission Requirements

Cover Letter

 One page including (1) the applicant’s name, (2) mailing address, (3) phone, (4) email, (5) academic institution name and address, (6) the title of the dissertation, and (7) its anticipated completion date.

Abstract

A one-page abstract summarizing the dissertation and its primary contributions.

Statement of Relevance

One-page statement explaining how the dissertation advances one or more of the themes central to the scholarship, such as peace education, ethics, or overcoming prejudice.

References

Two letters of reference that speak to the quality, feasibility, and impact of the applicant’s work.

Who is eligible to apply?

The scholarship is open to graduate and post-graduate students. Doctoral candidates nearing completion of their dissertations are especially encouraged to apply.

When will I hear back about my application?

Applications are reviewed on March 15 and October 15. Notifications are sent within 90 days of each review date.

Does the scholarship support general tuition?

The scholarship is intended to support dissertation work and related research. Tuition may be considered if it directly advances the applicant’s work on one of the scholarship’s focus areas.

What topics does the scholarship prioritize?

Do I need to be at a U.S. institution to apply?

Yes. Graduate students and post-doctoral scholars must be from an institution in the United States.
